The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) marks its 20th anniversary in 2025 with a vibrant program that underscores its commitment to South African musical innovation. Running from early July, the festival features the world premiere of RESONANCE, a composition by Kevin Harris inspired by anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, RESONANCE blends European classical traditions with improvisational creativity, encouraging musicians to explore South Africa’s cultural narratives. The SICMF has a history of commissioning works that resonate with local history, such as tributes to Denis Goldberg and Johnny Clegg, making it a vital platform for classical musicians to engage with South Africa’s socio-political context. This year’s festival continues to foster diversity in chamber music, offering workshops and performances that bridge local and global musical traditions. For South African musicians, the SICMF provides a unique opportunity to develop skills, collaborate with international artists, and contribute to a culturally significant repertoire, reinforcing Stellenbosch’s role as a hub for musical excellence.
