On June 10, 2025, Billboard announced the launch of Billboard Africa, a new platform dedicated to amplifying African music, with South Africa as a key focus. This initiative, reported by Forbes Africa, signals a significant economic opportunity for South African musicians, as it attracts global investment and enhances the continent’s music ecosystem. The platform aims to showcase homegrown genres like amapiano and Afro-house, which are driving Africa’s creative economy, projected to create millions of jobs by 2030.

Billboard Africa’s entry into the market is a response to the unprecedented growth of African music. In 2024, South African artists generated substantial revenue through streaming, with platforms like Spotify and Apple Music playing a pivotal role. The launch of Billboard Africa is expected to further increase visibility for South African musicians, attracting sponsorships, partnerships, and international collaborations. Dubai-based Global Venture Partners has already partnered with the initiative, emphasizing the untapped economic potential of Africa’s music industry.

For South African musicians, this development translates into tangible economic benefits. Increased global exposure through Billboard Africa can lead to higher streaming royalties, concert bookings, and brand endorsements. Artists like Griffith Malo, whose recent releases Mind Over Matter and Umzwangedwa have gained traction, stand to benefit from enhanced promotional opportunities. The platform also plans to host events and awards, creating additional revenue streams for artists and supporting industries like event management and media production.

However, the influx of international players raises concerns about economic equity. Posts on X suggest that while global platforms boost artist visibility, they often retain a significant share of profits, limiting local economic retention. To address this, industry leaders are advocating for policies that encourage investment in local infrastructure, such as recording studios and music schools. The Business & Financial Times notes that Africa’s creative industries, including music, currently account for only 1.5% of the global creative economy, highlighting the need for targeted investment to close this gap.

Billboard Africa’s launch is a game-changer for South African musicians, offering a platform to amplify their economic impact. By fostering global connections while addressing local challenges, this initiative could position South Africa as a powerhouse in the global music economy.
